Sparkling Memories …
Glorious Future!

Someone recently said, “I don’t know why there’s so much talk about wanting to get to Heaven when there is so much to enjoy about being here and now.”  I thought, “Yes, that’s verrry true—however, I’ve found that having a bright Eternal Perspective helps to make evvverything—good, bad and past, present and future, more understandable, acceptable and even appreciated when we focus on the good that is promised.

This brings to my mind the scripture that tells us , “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”  ~Philippians 4:8.  Awesome?!  Then take another look—the Message Bible says it this way, “Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse.  Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized.  Do that, and, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies.”

Contemplating these things, as I sit here typing, I am looking forward to taking my children to see the Grand Lighting in our local City Park tonight.  The memories of this area’s Christmases past flood my mind of my own childhood excitement as the lights would fill up the dim evening with unbelievable glitter and excitement.

Do you remember the exclamations—”Oooh, aaaah.”  “Wow!”  “It’s sooo beautiful.”  “Can you imagine how long it took to get all those lights up?”  “I think there are even more this year than ever!”

Santa Claus majestically heading up the scene with all enthusiasm and jolly “Ho, ho, ho’s.”  And then the friendly chatter and frolicking in the snow as we waited in line to have a word with the Main Man, himself.  As we inched toward the door of that cozy cabin that we had looked at longingly all year, we could feel the warmth of the roaring fire in the fireplace.  That glow only added to the magic of the evening!  Finally, I was face to face with Him, telling Him my heart’s biggest desire.  He looked me in the eye, listened intently and laughed with me about my excitement.  It was such a wonderful experience year after year.

And here we are, with our children, experiencing all of the holiday thrills.  Who is more blessed now, the kiddies or the parents and grandparents?  Even while so much in this world is wrong and sad, we still can get happy about the joys and hope of what God’s Son, Jesus brought to be celebrated year after year.  That being His gift of growing up to give Himself, in His death on a cross, for the sins of all of us that will eventually conquer death!  This gift of freedom from darkness allows us to look at everything with hearts full of love—His love for all mankind.

This hope includes the hope of Forever that Jesus is arranging for where He is preparing a room for us in His Father’s house. “My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.  John 14:2-3 (NIV)  This tells me that there will be a day when we have gone home to Heaven that we will see an even better sight than what we have been so thrilled by on Earth as it now is.  It will be our real home and the Main Man will not be a friendly impersonator of Father Christmas, but the author of Christmas—the King of Kings, the One who will reign over The New Earth.

What a Christmas that will be—when we will look into His eyes and see how He knows our hearts desires!  What adventures we have and can look forward to!
